A cantilevered perch
We have a cat, Lucy, and during the very brief periods when she's not sleeping or eating, she enjoys watching birds and chipmunks through windows. Devon and I thought it would be nice if there was a shelf under our dining room window so Lucy could sit in the window.
As usual, I went to SketchUp to start designing. I thought it might be nice if Lucy didn't have to jump all the way up to the window level, especially as she ages. I also wanted something that would appear somewhat fashionable since it would be a permanent fixture in our dining room.
It was a bit of a technical build because of all the angles and numerous operations per board, but it did come together OK. The legs are Black Cherry, and the shelves are stained White Oak, which I used to ensure the cantilevered shelves would support Lucy's heft.
Lucy doesn't use the lower two shelves much, but maybe she will as she gets older. She does use the top shelf multiple times daily though, and she likes rubbing her face where the legs join at the top, which was an unanticipated bonus.
It's a sturdy build, and it'll definitely outlive Lucy, after which we can use it as a plant stand. That'll be a welcome new use, since we can't currently have house plants because Lucy eats them. She's a bit of a turd, but at least she can look out the window now.
