Bluetooth Speaker

Looks good, sounds good

I was inspired by a small bluetooth speaker I saw at an Airbnb, so I decided to make it a project to make one of my own. After doing some (lots) of research, I selected the components, which included a Bluetooth PCB (printed circuit board), a speaker, a bit of wire, and a power jack for connecting it to a power source.

With components in-hand, I got to work designing in SketchUp, a 3d modeling tool. I wanted it to feel like a small piece of furniture with maybe hint of mid-century modern style. I found a beautiful piece of figured maple I wanted to use as the front panel, and I'm a sucker for Walnut, so that was the go-to for the box. Since it's Bluetooth, the only control would be a volume knob. I thought Walnut would look nice for that to set it apart from the front while also matching the box.

I really wanted the joinery to be tight and solid for this project, partly because I wanted it to look great, and also because solid joints are important in speaker cabinets to eliminate vibration problems. After tedious cutting and fitting, I was happy with the results. I used Maple splines (the light-colored wooden pieces on the outer corners) for a little extra visual pop.

Despite having made this several years ago now, I'm still happy with the result. It produces pretty respectable sound quality, which was one of my goals, though this currently lives quite happily on our bedside table as a sleep sound machine; a worthy cause.
